Auli Also known as a skier’s paradise, Auli has one of the best slopes in the world facilitating Himalayan Trekking in India. Auli has a winter resort run by the State government outfit, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). The ski slope here is the most popular in the state and one of the few with ski lifts. The season starts from end December or January and extends up to March. The 3km long slope ranges from 2519 m to 3049 m offers a magnificent panoramic view of great Himalayan peaks.Auli is 20 km away from Joshimath and59 from Badrinath. The steep slopes of Auli are as high as 9000 feet above sea level. The deodar and oak forests cover the slopes and reduce the velocity of the chilly winds to the minimum.The skiing center was set up in Auli in 1984. It is a good place for beginners as GMVN conducts 7 and 14 days skiing courses at subsidized rates. In the summer, Auli bugyal is inviting but in the winter it is irresistible with its hoary snow slopes and skiing facilities. Auli can be reached by road or ropeway from Joshimath.While skiing is the chief attraction at Auli, there are other attraction like cable car rides and rope lifts, or spend the day outdoors building snowmen, or having snowball fights.

Climate | When to Visit

Summers (March to June) are very pleasant with moderate climate, with average around 18C. Summers is ideal for all sight seeing and pilgrimage. Winters (November to February) are chilly days with average minimum touching near 5C. Minimum can touch sub zero levels and snow falling seen very often during winters. These months are perfect for travelers liking chilly climates.

Although one usually carries pullovers and other woolen wear while visiting tourist spots during winters, one has to remember that Auli is not just another winter tourist spot. The freezing temperatures force the visitors to carry such winter wear in adequate quantity and of good quality. One good practice is to carry a first-aid kit. All those interested to explore the snowfields of Auli should necessarily carry with them dark glasses, snow/gum boots, and a torch. All visitors are also advised to carry with them adequate number of spare cells or candles, as there is an acute power crisis in the region.If one is an adventure freak, the best time to visit Auli is during the winter season.
