Kiama Blowholes

City: Kiama       State: New South Wales       Country: Australia
The Kiama Blowhole is a blowhole in the town of Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. It is the town's major tourist attraction. Under certain sea conditions, the blowhole can spray water up to 25 metres (82 ft) in the air, in quantities that thoroughly drench any bystanders. There is actually a second, less famous blowhole in Kiama, commonly referred to as the "Little Blowhole" by locals. It is much smaller than the other (called the "Big Blowhole"), but due to its narrow shape, it is actually more reliable than the Big Blowhole, and in the right conditions can be equally spectacular. As a wave rushes in to the hole in the cliff, the air in the lower part of the hole is compressed into an inner chamber; then, as the wave starts to fall back, the compressed air expands, forcing the water up through the upper part of the blowhole and into the air with a loud 'ooomph'. The first European to see the blow hole was a whaler, George Bass, who anchored here in 1797, the Aboriginals call the blowhole Khanterintee and the town's name means, 'where the sea makes a noise'. The rough seas and winds along this part of the shore have created other beautiful forms in the cliffs, such as Cathedral Rocks, Stack Island and Fry's Cave, while a little higher up the valley is the magnificent Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve, a tiny remnant of the original flora of the area, which is particularly noted for its variety of tree ferns and for the pretty Minnamurra Falls.
