The Grand Canyon
City: Williams State: Arizona Country: USA
The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet). Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. It is not just the sense of our planet's past that is awe-inspiring; it is the sheer size of the canyon, which some 1.5 km (1 mi) deep and has views that stretch across more than 16 km (10 mi), a scale different to imagine until you are confronted with the reality of it. The rocks are coloured and stained gold, orange and crimson, and the river's waters are red with the sediment it carries down to the sea.The southern rim is more popular because it is easier to reach, but a new Skywalk has been opened on the northern rim. Hiking trails and mule rides allow access to the canyon walls, while plane and helicopter trips operate from Las Vegas and Phoenix and the adventurous can travel downriver by raft or boat.
