It is the largest brackish water coastal lagoon of Asia.The lake was formed due to the silting action of the Mahanadi River. It covers an area of over 1,000 sq. km and is a great attraction for the tourists for fishing, bird watching and boating. The lagoon, has many islands, some of which are uninhabited, Nalbana Island to the centre of the lake is a bird sanctuary. Ferries can be hired at various points of the lake. In winter Chilika lake comes to life with thousands of indigenous and migratory birds of many varieties which come from far and near. Migratory birds arrive in October from as far away as Siberia and generally stay until March. Part of the lake is protected by the Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary, which harbors over 150 migratory and resident species of birds namely flamingos, cranes, herons, osprey, geese, painted storks, pelicans, and kites. . The lake also has an interesting range of aquatic animals, including the Irrawaddy dolphin. One can view the dolphins at Chilika mouth near Satpara. The rare limbless lizard is endemic to one of the lake's small islandsPlaces of tourist interest in Chilika : Kalijai Island, Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, Birds Island, Nalabana (Island of Reeds), Parikud Island, etc. are some of the interesting spots inside the lake. The larger islands lie between the sandbar and the lake, separated by shallow channels, and include Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara.The Island of Kalijai is famous as a center of religious worship due to the temple of Goddess Kalijai where a big fair is held on the occasion of Makara Sakranti that falls in January every year. The Island of Nalabana, 8 km in circumference occupies a unique place in the vast expanse of Chilika Lake as it happens to be the central point for the migratory birds.
